The Street Lawyer (and other short stories) ;)

I also happened to read The Street Lawyer by John 'I used to be a lawyer' Grisham.
I was about a 100 pages into the book when I realized that I had already read it once, but continued to read it anyway.

This is one of those books which makes you stop and think for a while - "What am I doing with my life?"
We work to earn money- money so that our families can live safely and securely, so that we can buy those few things we desire, eat at a fancy restaurant, our children go to the best school we can afford, our parents are happy, etc.

Yet, we spend more time at our workplace than actually doing the things mentioned above.

So how do we achieve the real motive that we're working for? We're spending long hours in the office making sure we're up for a promotion or that we clinch that business deal, but our families don't get to see as much of as they'd like to.
We don't get enough time to do what we'd like to. I might want to write a book, learn to play the guitar, work with NGOs, go trekking, but how can I?

Anyway, it's a circle and we just go round and round!

That's all folks!!

p.s- why the "and other short stories " in the title of this post? aise hi! Sue karte kya? Sue sue yehaan nako karo, side me karo! :)

Angels and Demons & The Da Vinci code

I read 'The Da Vinci Code' about a year ago and found it mind blowing. I read 'Angels and Demons' about a month back and my only thoughts while I was reading the novel was " Haven't I read this somewhere before?"
The books were too similar. Why write two books which have almost the same story lines? Change 'Illuminati' to 'Opus Dei' and you can assume that you've read both the books.
True, Dan Brown has done a wonderful job in BOTH the books, but the only reason Da Vinci Code got more publicity was because it went against the Church's belief's and against Opus Dei which is not extinct like the Illuminati.

Apparently, Digital Fortress, aslo written by Dan Brown isn't as predictable as these two books probably because the protagonist isn't Robert Langdon anymore!

Im still waiting for the movie to come out where Tom Hanks is playing Robert Langdon in the Hollywood adaptation of The Da Vinci Code. Shooting's already started!

Book Review- The five people you meet in Heaven-Mitch Albom!

Well, I just finished reading this book and it was one of those books which you cannot NOT like.
Its about this old guy, Eddie, who dies and (guess what) goes to heaven. But its not heaven as we know it, the author creates this wonderfully real (and little surreal) image of heaven.
What this book tries to show is that nothing in our lives is a coincidence or by chance- there is a reason for everything that happens to us (and doesnt happen to us as well).

For eg, out of the 5 people that Eddie meets in heaven, he doesnt recall meeting/ knowing 3 of them, but as they explain to him that their paths had indeed crossed on earth, Eddie starts to understand his time spent on earth and makes sense of his life which appeared very ordinary to him ( and me, initially).

One of the interesting things to point in this book is that it starts with letting the reader know that Eddie is gonna die and then goes about describing his last actions on earth. (There are lines like "28 mintues to his death") This actually makes you a little uncomfortable, as if you know he's going to die, but can't do anything to stop it.

Its got some very emotional parts, like when he meets his wife in heaven- you feel so glad to have the people you love close to you and makes you feel differently about them, because so often we see relationships withering away because the people involved didn't put in any effort to revive it or took things for granted which caused a lot of hurt. :)

Original one-SPJ !!

There was once a poll held to find out which was the best music band of all. U2 came out as winners. The fans who had voted for U2 suddenly started helping the poor, doctors not charging the poor patients, lawyers giving free legal advice, etc.. Why did this happen?

A. Because the fans were "Pro-Bono". :))

Hehe, Original one from yours truly-Sameer! :)

ABN AMRO?

Arre bhaiya, if any of my non existent readers work at the ABN AMRO bank, could you please find out what happened to my credit card which was apparently "pre-approved". Their executive came over to my house and made me fill up a form and took my driver's license from me more than 2 weeks ago! The lady on the phone said she's gonna have the card delivered in 2 days!
I'm just scared that this card isnt delivered to somebody else... huge CC fraud going on these days! I try contacting ABN AMRO and their call center puts me on hold for 15 mins! Can u believe it? 15 goddamn minutes!

HELP, I need somebody....HELP.. not just anybody!!!

raving and ranting

You know sometimes, life just sucks! No matter what you do, when you do, how you do.. shit will happen to you!
I just hate it that even after not doing anything wrong I have to undergo post surgery trauma without actually having any surgery done on myself!
If you do something you're damned, if you dont you're damned! I just wish there was some way of resolving issues into a mutually acceptable solution.
Its those delicate and sensitive issues which are the toughest... where there are feelings involved!

I wish I could write every detail but unfortunately blogs aren't the best place to rant! (Get a diary, you moron!!)

I'm frustrated, tired of having to always be the one to compromise!

Time in Bangalore!

I'm posting on my blog after a very long time! When I mean post, I mean actually write something and not just post some pic of mine.I got very nostalgic today.. about my time in Bangalore! :)
I met some amazing friends in Bangalore. I met my girlfriend there too.I sometimes used to think whether it would have been better for me if I had worked hard and got into an IIT, but the answer is an overwhelming no!If I hadnt come to Bangalore, I would never have met Neha who is the love of my life! No engineering degree is worth not having met her. I'm lucky that she loves me as dearly as I love her. She's a very beautiful girl, has the kindest of hearts.
though sometimes she can be quite a handful so I have to be on my toes. Thats such a small price. :)
Coming to my college, the only positive part of those 4 years were the friends I made there.
Lets go one by one in no particular order:

1. Narayan Singh Rathore:
Most misunderstood guy in class, (Dil ka saaf hai), always getting into trouble, sometime for his Ash ;) U needed to be patient with this guy, but you can count on him if you're in trouble. Even if you're not on talking terms with him, he'll help you out if you were in trouble. True friend! Right now getting trained to join the Indian Army in OTA, Chennai

2. Rakesh Kumar Singh:
Funniest guy in class (after me ;) ) . He's a real sweet chap and we used to gel well. Our sense of humour was identical. Hauda? Yaodo? :)) He's another guy who would help you out in trouble. Good part about him was that he was straight as a pole.
No backbiting with him. If he likes you, you'll know, if he doesn't you'll know! We were partners for most projects in college.Right now working in a good company (forgot the name :) ) in Bangalore on C++.

3. Prashant Kumar:
The original brain from Jharkhand :)Most often than not, used to get "out of out" in internals. "Out of out", btw was a term unique to our college which meant
full marks. He married our classmate Anupama. He always had an eye for her though denied it initially. :)Bugger didn't invite me for the wedding! :) (I know you must have been busy, pal.)A lot of respect for him! Currently working in Satyam!

4. Anupama Kalyan (now Agarwal I think):
Gutsiest girl I have ever known. I never spoke much with her, in fact I hardly used to speak to any girl in college (my friends here find that impossible). She lost her right arm in a very unfortunate accident, but has pulled through amazingly!I admire you for your spirit! Currently working in Satyam!

5. Nandini Prakash:
One of the few girls I spoke to in college. Most bindas girl and the most helpful girl. We used to go together to college during our final sem. I saved on fuel costs so much thanks to her. Great company, can talk nineteen to the dozen!Currently working in a company in Bangalore (forgot this name too) on java if I'm not wrong.

6. Naik Santosh:
I wanted to put his name as YEshwant 'cos some of our lecturers used to think that was his name. It's his father's name, which is included in his name and he used to get real cheesed off. He's another great great chap! Fundoo guy! We were in the college cricket team together. He was the coordinator (his official designation :) ) HE apparently has a bad temper, but I have never seen it, probably because I never wanted to get him angry! ;) He would have kicked my ass! :)) He had a great sense of humour. Whaaaaat man?Currently working in Infosys, Bangalore.

7. Bhaskar V:
Part of the original brain club along with Prashant. Consistently in the top 3 of our class. Very helpful guy, used to get me the copies of all the books for college. I once remember how well he explained an Engg Graphics problem to me! I wish he was a lecturer in our college. I wouldn't have had to take tuitions. ;) Currently working in Infosys, Bangalore after working for a Japanese company, Yokogawa (or Tokogawa?)

8. Shashidhar Rao:
Power packed Dynamo! He was 4 by 4 and still is. ;) Short and sweet applies very well to him, but he has the stature of a big man! He could get a giant like Raghunath to argue with him and still win....Another very nice chap, his idol is Sachin Tendulkar (as is mine) and has a voice which resembles his.Currently working in Satyam , Hyderabad. (Havent been able to meet him even once)

9. George Fernandes:
What can I say about George Fried Rice? That was the name I had given him once when Rakesh and I were joking around. His favourite sentence was "What, man?". HE valiantly tried to get us a project in IISc, but was too high funda for us so we couldnt do it.His another specialty was that he used to address everyone by their full name eg. Where are you going, Narayan singh Rathore? Whereabouts Unkown ;)

10. Rajesh:
Another sweet fellow, very helpful. Had a typical south Indian accent hence couldnt not pronounce the "Ha" sound properly. So khaana was k_aana for him and haath was _aath. Another intelligent guy.Currently working in a good company in Bangalore( no need to say that I forgot the name)

11. Goutam V Jain:
Sharp guy, very intelligent. We used to come on the same college bus. Seeing him on the bus was very reassuring during exams. Both of used to be very tense during the exams. Currently working in a company, working on C++.

12. Yadukula BC:
Sweet chap, very friendly and very helpful. Had a run in with a drinking problem (I remember his "save water, Drink Beer" tshirt) Used to speak very cutely in Hindi! was from Coorg and has coffee plantation there. Promised to get me coffee from there! Still havent got it ;) I think he's working somewhere in Bangalore!

13. Akaash Sikhor Barua:
If anyone knows where this guy is, tell him to get in touch with me on email. Ive tried contacting him, but I guess his number must have changed. He was this really tall dude and pretty good looking. Had lots and lots of girlfriends (sometime at the same time). He's from Assam, he was in the mech branch. Used to hang a lot during the first two years, then gradually decreased over the next two years, but used to catch up once in a while! Whereabouts unknown! Call me , email me ,dude!

14. Elan Cherian:
Vice Captain of our college cricket team. Was originally pipped to be the Captain but they chose me instead. He was and I'm sure still is, a genuinely nice guy. Bloody good bowler, was one of the rare bowler who could scare the shit out of me esp on the uneven practice pitches of ours in college. I want his number too- help, somebody!! He was also from the mechanical
branch!Whereabouts unknown!

15. Punnet Dhupar:
Delhi da munda, another punjabi in college. We used to hang out in college and during the little that I stayed in the college hostel. Great guy. I think he sometimes thought that I was interested in this girl who he was very friendly with. She was in the E&C batch, 2 years our junior! I even asked him for her number, but he never gave it to me. ;) She was the closest thing to a hot girl in our college. Currently working in Subex, Bangalore.

So these are some of the friends I made in college. I will probably add on to this list later.Along with friends, there were a few lecturers who helped me out in college too. Their help was invaluable!

Platooooooooon!! Great Movie! Posted by Picasa

Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V.

Not too long ago, a large seminar was held for
ministers and reverends
in training. Among the facilitators were many
well-known motivational
speakers. One such speaker boldly approached the
pulpit and, gathering
the entire crowd's attention, said, "The best years of
my life were
spent in the arms of a woman who wasn't my wife!" The
crowd was shocked!
He followed up by saying," That woman was my mother!"
The crowd burst
into laughter and he gave his speech, which was well
received.

About a week later, one of the ministers who had
attended the seminar
decided to use that joke in his sermon. As he shyly
approached the
pulpit one sunny Sunday, he tried to rehearse the joke
in his head. It
was a bit foggy to him. Getting to the microphone he
said loudly, "The
greatest years of my life were spent in the arms of a
woman who was not
my wife!"

His congregation sat shocked, murmuring. After
standing there for
almost10 seconds trying to recall the second half of
the joke, the
pastor finally blurted out "...and I can't remember
who she was!"

Moral of the story: Don't copy if you can't paste.

Earth Angel

Song by Chuck Berry! Absolutely beautiful lyrics!!

Earth angel, earth angel
Will you be mine
My darling dear
Love me all the time
I'm just a fool (just a fool)
A fool in love, with you
Earth angel, earth angel The one I adore
Lovely for ever and ever more
(I'm just a fool)
I'm just a fool
(oh what a fool)
A fool in love with you
Yes in love with you
I fell for you And I knew
The vision of my love's loveliness
I hope and I pray that some day
I'll be the vision
(vision)
The vision of your happiness
Angel my darling
Last night I fell in love
with a little piece of heaven on Earth
It was you
The way you walk, the way you talk
The way you bat your eye lids as I pull up in my open-top chevvy
I don't know what I'd do without you
Earth Angel I will never let you go
Angel of angels
Earth angel
- ohEarth aangel, earth angel
Will you be mine
My darling dear
Love me all the time
(I'm just a fool)
I'm just a fool
(Oh what a fool)
A fool in love with you
Oh - my love
I'm just a fool
(Just a fool)A fool in loveWith ....
You Fool in love with you

Friends.....are the best!!

Today i got in touch with a really old friend of mine (no he's not 99 years old). we were together in school and then lost contact after he moved out of class 10. his name is Hari and we used to be BEST buddies in school!
He was a real nice guy! (still is) we were part of a gang in school in class 5 i think and i was the leader and he was my second in command, so to speak!
He's in IIT kharagpur and doing really well!
my god the times we've shared together, having fun in school!
my "code" name in the gang was Arnold "easier to pronounce than spell" Schwarzenegger and he was sylvester stallone!
hopefully we'll be meeting up in june when he comes down to hyderabad!
i got in touch with another old friend, Hetu!
he was also a brain, and after passing out of IITM is doing his MS in the US. he was always the big guy in our group who always respected!he was one year senior to me!nice guy!
hoping to meet him too, whenever he comes down to India

IT'S BETWEEN YOU AND GOD ...

Another poeam that my girlfriend, Neha, sent me!
very sweet and true, just like her!!

People are often unreasonable,
Illogical, and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind,
People may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful,
You will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank,
People may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building,
Someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness,
They may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today,
People will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have,
And it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis,
It is between you and God;
It never was between you and them anyway.

For me!!

My girlfriend is in Bangalore while I'm here in Hyderabad!
She writes the most beautiful poems and so i thought I'll post one here!

This is to tell you something
To tell you how I feel
It may not be imp to you
May not be a big deal!

But the fact still remains
And how I feel is always the same
I love you more than I love anything
Though distance is a part of the game!

pretty good, i say! (am i in bangalore??)
during my college in bangalore, i did notice one thing, that the lecturers over there (we were the lecturees) had this habit of saying "I say" at the end of quite a few of their sentences!
reminded me of Asterix in England, in which asterix and obelix couldnt understand why the English used to end their sentences with "I say"!!
wahay!

You know what?

This world has lost that loving feeling..........

my contribution

I donated two days of my salary, my company SumTotal Systems, matched my contribution and so did our senior VP.
In addition my team also contributed rs. 6k towards the fund.
What have you done for them?

Happy New Year

Happy....really?
not a very "happy" new year this time!the tsunami made sure about that!
words cant express the sorrow of all those people who were affected by it and numbers can't give you the correct amount of what a family which was affected by it must have lost........
we're all safe in our worlds, but spare a thought for those who dont even have a photograph of their loved ones...absolutely nothing left of their loved ones, just their memories (imagine not even having a photograph to remember them with).
count your blessings and do something TODAY for those affected by the tsunami.
donate money to an aid foundation, donate clothes, medicines and if possible some of your time to help the needy.
pray for the departed souls, those who were not even given a decent burial, those who's bodies arent found yet!
Happy New Year!
